Age Calculator for Govt Exams

Enter a cut-off date, the age limits and your date of birth to see your exact age on that date and whether you are within the limit.

Category relaxation (years added to max age)

What this tool does

This age calculator works out your exact age in completed years, months and days on a cut-off date you choose, then compares it with an exam's minimum and maximum age after adding the relaxation for your category. Exam presets load the official cut-off date and limits, and every field can be edited for a notification that is not listed.

How it works

Completed years, months and days

Government recruitment counts age the way a birthday does: you are 24 until the day you turn 25, however close that day is. The calculator subtracts your date of birth from the cut-off date one part at a time. It takes the difference in years, then months, then days. If the day part comes out negative, it borrows one month and adds the number of days in the month before the cut-off date; if the month part is negative, it borrows a year and adds twelve months. The result is the same figure you would get by counting on a calendar.

For example, a candidate born on 15 March 2001 checking against 1 August 2026 is 25 years, 4 months and 17 days old: 25 full years to 15 March 2026, four more months to 15 July, and 17 days from 15 July to 1 August.

The cut-off date is fixed by the notification

Every notification names one date on which age is measured, written as “age as on” or “reckoned as on”. Different boards choose different dates, and some use a date months after the form closes, so working from today's date can give the wrong answer by close to a year. That is why the cut-off date is an input here rather than assumed. A preset fills it from the exam's rules; for anything else, copy it from the age section of the notification.

Birth-date ranges settle boundary cases

An age band such as 21–32 leaves one question open: is a person who turns 32 exactly on the cut-off date still eligible? Notifications answer it with a pair of birth dates. UPSC's Civil Services notice states: “the candidate must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1994 and not later than 1st August, 2005.” SBI uses the same structure and adds the words “both days inclusive” so there is no doubt about the end dates.

Read like this, the upper limit stops the day before you reach the maximum age, while the lower limit includes the day you reach the minimum. The calculator follows the same rule: exactly 21 on the cut-off date is eligible for a 21–32 band, exactly 32 is not. It also prints the matching range with your result, such as “Eligible if born between 02.08.1994 and 01.08.2005”, so you can hold it against the notification line by line.

How relaxation is applied

Relaxation for reserved categories is a number of years added to the upper limit only. With a general limit of 30 years, three years for OBC makes the OBC limit 33 and five years for SC/ST makes it 35; the lower limit stays where it was. The four boxes in the tool hold those added years. Presets fill them from the exam's rules, and you can change them when a notification sets other values or other groups, such as ex-servicemen or widows.

After the check, the calculator also looks one year ahead and tells you whether you would still be within the limit for the next cycle if the cut-off date stays the same. It is a rough planning aid: boards can change limits or dates between cycles.

How to use it

  1. Pick an exam or enter limits. Choose an exam preset to load its cut-off date and age limits, or type the minimum and maximum age from your notification.
  2. Check the relaxations. The category boxes hold the years added to the upper limit. Change them if your notification gives different numbers.
  3. Set the cut-off date. Enter the "age as on" date from the notification. It is not today’s date or the exam date unless the notification says so.
  4. Enter your date of birth. Use the date printed on your Class 10 certificate, because that is the record checked at document verification.
  5. Choose your category. Tap your category to see your age in years, months and days, and whether it falls inside your limit.
  6. Compare the birth-date range. The result shows the dates you must be born between. Check that they match the "born not earlier than / not later than" dates in your notification.

Worked examples: common age limits and cut-off dates

These are the age settings used most often across the 166 exam and post pages on this site, built from the same rules that drive each exam's age-limit calculator. Posts with the same limits, date and relaxation are grouped together, and the relaxation column shows the years added to the general upper limit.

Common reasons candidates are found ineligible

Age problems usually surface late, at document verification, after the exam has been written. The rules below, quoted from notifications, are the ones most often misread.

Relaxation claimed without a valid certificate
Category relaxation holds only with a certificate in the format and validity period the notification asks for. Without it you are assessed against the general limit.
Date of birth differs between documents
Fill the form with the date on your Class 10 certificate. If other records disagree, get them corrected before applying rather than at verification.

Frequently asked questions

What does "age as on 1 August" mean?

It means your age is measured on that single date. The application date, the exam date and today’s date do not matter for eligibility, unless the notification names one of them as the cut-off.

Can I apply if I turn exactly 30 on the cut-off date and the limit is 30?

Usually not. IBPS, SBI, SSC, UPSC, RRB and TNPSC notifications all print ranges that end the day before the 30th birthday, so the calculator marks this case as not eligible. Turning exactly the minimum age on the cut-off date is allowed.

Does category relaxation also lower the minimum age?

No. Relaxation adds years to the upper age limit only. The minimum age is the same for every category.

Can I add OBC and PwBD relaxation together?

Many central notifications allow a PwBD candidate to add the category relaxation on top of the disability relaxation, up to a stated ceiling. The rule differs by exam, so type the combined figure only if your notification allows it.

Which date of birth should I use?

Use the date on your Class 10 or matriculation certificate. Boards accept only that record for age, so a different date on an Aadhaar card or school leaving certificate will not help at verification.

Why do two posts in the same exam have different limits?

Recruitments such as SSC CGL list several posts with their own age bands. Pick the exact post in the preset list. The most common setting on this site, used by 3 exam pages, is 18–27 years as on 1 Aug 2026.

Does the calculator store my date of birth?

No. The calculation is done by JavaScript in your browser, and the date you type is not sent to FreeApplyTools or saved after you close the page.
